openKylin Visits Beijing Institute of Technology: Connecting Open Source Learning with Community Practice

On October 11, the 2026 OpenAtom "Campus Tour" event at Beijing Institute of Technology was held. The event was hosted by the OpenAtom Open Source Foundationand organized by Beijing Institute of Technology, with the theme "Gather at the Campus, Advance Together in Open Source." It featured a main forum, a teacher seminar, and a student hands-on technical session, providing a platform for university faculty and students to learn about open source projects, participate in community practice, and exchange teaching and research needs.
University and Community Join Hands to Cultivate Open Source Talent
At the start of the event,Wang Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Beijing Institute of Technology, delivered a welcome address, welcoming open source community experts and ecosystem partners to the campus to exchange with faculty and students.

Xie Shaofeng, Chairman of the OpenAtom Open Source Foundation, attended the event and delivered remarks. This "Campus Tour" closely connects universities with the open source community, building an exchange platform for faculty and students to learn about key projects, participate in real practice, and carry out teaching cooperation.

The OpenAtom openKylin (referred to as "openKylin") community participated in this event. In the morning, it shared information on the project and pathways for university participation; in the afternoon, focusing on how open source projects can be integrated into university teaching and research and how students can take their first step toward community contribution, the community engaged with faculty and students of Beijing Institute of Technology through project sharing, teacher exchange and discussion, and student hands-on practice.
Getting to Know openKylin and Understanding Pathways for University Participation in Open Source

In the morning main forum,Li Zhenning, Director of the openKylin Ecosystem Committee, gave a presentation titled "The openKylin Project and Pathways for University Participation," introducing the project and community participation directions to faculty and students of Beijing Institute of Technology, helping them find entry points that combine with study, research, and practice. Students can start with tasks such as issue feedback, feature testing, documentation improvement, and translation, gradually participating in code development and software adaptation, and through subsequent teacher exchanges and student practice, further understand the open source collaboration process.
Exchanging Teaching and Research Needs and Exploring Ways to Connect Universities and Communities

In the afternoon,Ma Fajun, Head of openKylin Ecosystem Cooperation, participated in the teacher seminar, exchanging with teaching leaders in computer-related disciplines, professional course instructors, and heads of laboratories and research teams at Beijing Institute of Technology on integrating open source co-construction into courses, experimental teaching, open source competitions, graduation projects, and research topics. They discussed how to combine teaching objectives with community needs, transform real engineering problems into practical tasks suitable for students, and build smooth channels for sustained teaching and research collaboration between universities and the community.

Hands-On Practice Makes System Experience the Starting Point for Contribution

In parallel with the teacher seminar,Cao Dandan, openKylin University Ecosystem Development Manager, presented the workshop "openKylin Hands-On Practice: From System Experience to Community Contribution," introducing the community and operating system, participation channels, and contribution processes, with a focus on Issue feedback, PR submission standards, and basic operations such as CLA signing and Git configuration. The course set practical tasks around system installation experience, defect reproduction, and code and documentation contributions, guiding students to choose directions suited to their own foundation, record results with screenshots or links, and learn to submit clear, verifiable community contributions.

Starting from a Single Experience to Sustain Participation in Open Source Collaboration
This event at Beijing Institute of Technology combined project sharing, teacher exchanges, and student hands-on practice, providing opportunities for faculty and students to learn about openKylin, explore ways to integrate teaching and research, and understand the contribution process.
For students encountering open source for the first time, the starting point can be a system experience, a clear issue report, or a verified documentation improvement. By gradually becoming familiar with community rules through real tasks and refining results through feedback and review, students can accumulate operating system practice experience and deepen their understanding of open source collaboration.
The openKylin community welcomes more university faculty and students to learn about the project, experience the system, and participate in community building based on their own interests. It is hoped that this exchange will serve as a starting point, further connecting learning and exploration on campus to ongoing open source practice.
